Family Legacy:
Pictures for Generations
Capturing Generations With Ease
Adding kids or grandparents to your photoshoot? You’re in for something beautiful. These are the people who matter most in your story and including them in your session brings authenticity, legacy, and a whole lot of heart to your images.
Wrangling little ones or navigating mobility concerns with older family members can feel a little overwhelming. That’s where some thoughtful prep and a relaxed approach go a long way. As a photographer, I’ve seen it all from toddler meltdowns to spontaneous three-generation group hugs and I promise, the chaos is almost always worth it.

Here’s how to include kids and grandparents in your family legacy session without the stress and with a whole lot more connection, calm, and candid magic.
Plan Ahead (But Stay Flexible) – The key to success? A little structure with room to breathe.
-
Pick the Right Time: For families with kids, plan your session around naps and snacks. Morning or early evening sessions often work best.
-
Prep the Grandparents: Let them know what to expect outfit choices, location terrain, session duration especially if stairs, long walks, or standing for long periods will be involved.
-
Know Your “Must-Haves”: I always ask clients to list their top 2–3 can’t miss shots. That way, even if we have a wild card toddler moment, we’ve got the important stuff covered early.
- Keep Everyone Comfortable: Happy faces start with feeling at ease physically and emotionally.
-
Bring Layers: Whether it’s a sweater for chilly park mornings or a wrap for Grandma to stay cozy, having options helps.
-
Shoes Matter: For kids, avoid brand new shoes that might cause discomfort. For grandparents, stick with comfortable, supportive footwear fashionable and functional.
-
Mobility Aids Welcome: If walkers, canes, or wheelchairs are part of the picture, let’s plan the location accordingly. Accessibility never has to limit beauty.

Let the Kids Be Kids
Trying to force perfect poses often backfires especially with toddlers or young children.
-
Give Them a Job: Ask them to tickle Grandpa, give Mom a big hug, or count the clouds with Grandma. Giving them something to do keeps them engaged.
-
Snack Bribes Are Totally Fine: Keep non-messy snacks (like Cheerios or fruit snacks) on hand. We can always pause for a little boost.
-
Keep Sessions Short & Sweet: Mini sessions or well paced full sessions help avoid burnout. We’ll focus on play, laughter, and genuine connection not perfection.
- Embrace the Candid Moments: Some of the best images aren’t posed, they’re real.
-
Hand-Holding, Whispered Secrets, or Shared Laughter: These moments often tell more of your story than a perfect “look at the camera” shot ever could.
-
Don’t Sweat the Wiggles: Movement = life. I’ll guide the flow and use motion to create beautiful, natural images.
What to Bring for a Smooth Family Legacy Session
Let’s keep things simple but smart with a quick checklist to pack for your session:
-
Snacks & Water: For kids and grown ups.
-
Wipes or Tissues: For runny noses or quick cleanups.
-
Comfort Items: A favorite stuffed animal, a small toy, or a sentimental object for Grandma.
-
Blanket or Folding Chair: Especially helpful for outdoor sessions involving older family members.
-
Slip On Shoes for Parents: You’ll be chasing toddlers one minute and posing the next. Make it easy on yourself!

Why These Moments Matter
Including grandparents and children in your session is not only sweet but deeply meaningful. These photos become cherished heirlooms that capture your family legacy unfolding in real time. Long after the session ends, these images will be the ones you return to again and again, reminding you of the love and connection shared across generations.
