Some practical tips

What’s one of the biggest keys to a smooth, stress free wedding day? A well-thought-out Wedding Day Timeline.

As a photographer, I’ve seen how a good schedule can make all the difference. Not just for the photos, but also for your whole experience. A thoughtful wedding timeline keeps things relaxed, gives you space to soak in the magic, and ensures your most meaningful moments are beautifully captured.

Whether you’re working with a planner or mapping it out on your own. Here are my go to tips for building a wedding day timeline that works with photography, not against it.

Why Your Photography Timeline Matters
Let’s be real, your photographer is with you more than almost anyone else on your wedding day. That means our flow has a big impact on your day’s energy.

A great photography timeline maximizes the best light (hello, golden hour!) It also prevents feeling rushed or overwhelmed & builds in breathing room for natural, candid moments. It also makes space for all the must-have photos without sacrificing your celebration

Sample Wedding Day Timeline

Every wedding is unique, but here’s a classic outline many of our couples follow:

Early Afternoon
Final hair and makeup touches. Your photographer arrives and starts capturing flatlays and candid prep moments.

Mid-Afternoon
Time to get into your dress or suit. A sweet first look with a parent or your partner often happens here, followed by couple and wedding party portraits.

Late Afternoon
Guests begin arriving. You’re tucked away for a quiet moment before the ceremony.

Evening
Ceremony time, followed by family formals. Then comes cocktail hour, golden hour portraits, and the start of the reception.

Night
Introductions, dinner, toasts, first dances, and open dance floor. Your photographer wraps up, or stays for your grand exit.

First Look or Not?

This decision can shape your timeline.

Doing a first look before the ceremony opens up time for couple portraits and wedding party shots early, which means you’ll have more time to mingle during cocktail hour.

If you’re going traditional and saving that moment for the aisle, we’ll adjust the timeline to ensure we get those key portraits afterward without feeling rushed.

Lighting Is Everything
Photographers chase light (no pun intended 😉). The best time for romantic portraits? Golden hour ~ that dreamy, soft light just before sunset. If possible, plan to sneak away for 10–15 minutes during this window for stunning, glowy portraits of just the two of you.

We also take lighting into account when it comes to indoor getting-ready spaces, ceremony placement, and even your dance floor. The better the light, the better your photos.

Tips for a Smooth Wedding Day Schedule

  • Hire a planner or day of coordinator ! They’ll keep everything running smoothly so you don’t have to.
  • Communicate your timeline clearly ~ Share it with vendors, your family, and your wedding party.
  • Add a few 5–10 minute buffers throughout your day. They’re lifesavers when things run a little long
    (and they always do!).
  • Trust your photographer’s input ~ We know how long things take and what’s realistic.
